avoiding unnecessary driving

The most effective way to reduce pollution from your vehicle is to use it less. Using public transportation at least once a week makes a difference. With some planning, it is not difficult to reduce car usage or even adapt to a car-free lifestyle.

Car Pooling

Car pooling reduces congestion on road and fuel consumption. Get your colleagues and friends together to share for trips to and from office or home. That's less fuel wasted on separate trips.

Alternate Mode of Traveling - Walking and Cycling

Take a walk or cycle for short distances. It improves healthy lifestyle and is more environmentally friendly.

The average person walking speed is about 3-4km/h, so distances within 1 km can be comfortably covered within 20 minutes. You can also make these short walking trips an opportunity to exercise.

Cycling is especially useful and convenient for short trips of 15 minutes or less. It is also one of the fastest and cheapest ways to get around for short errands at work or home. It improves your health and creates no pollution at all.

If you are a keen cyclist, you might want to know that foldable bicycles (folded size 81cm x 58cm x 30cm) are allowed on MRT trains. This makes it possible to ride to the MRT station from your home or office and then carry your bicycle with you. In this way you are creating your very own seamless green transport system.

Use Public Transport

Taking public transport is cheaper than using your own vehicle. There is no need to search and pay for parking. You will not need to pay for Electronic Road Pricing and fuel, you will be quicker when travelling within the Central Business District.

With better integration of public bus, MRT and LRT routes, public transport allows us to reach most places in Singapore within 45 minutes.

TransitLink has an ez-link Park & Ride Scheme to help cars owners to leave their vehicles at designated parking lots and continue their journey hassle-free by public bus, MRT or LRT.

Using Public Transport is also less energy intensive than driving. This saves precious fossil fuels and reduces pollution. On average, cars use at least four times as much energy as the MRT train, and twice as much as a bus, to move to one passenger one kilometer.

Car Sharing Scheme

Car sharing scheme can help save you money and help save resources. Since each car is used by several people, it makes much more resource-efficient use of the car. Both NTUC INCOME and Honda Diracc offer good car sharing scheme.
