fuel cost calculations

You can estimate your annual fuel costs by using the following calculation:

Annual fuel costs ($)     =

Fuel cost ($/litre) x

Annual distance travelled (km)

Fuel Economy figure (km/litre)

To assist motorists in estimating fuel costs, the following resources are made available on this website:

Estimating Your Fuel Costs

To provide motorists with indicative figures, the estimated fuel costs for vehicles with various fuel economy figures are provided here, based on fuel costs at $1.40/litre, $1.50/litre, and $1.60/litre respectively. An annual distance travelled of 20,000 km is assumed.

Fuel Economy Calculator

The Fuel Economy Calculator allows you to compute your total fuel costs based on your input information (fuel cost, distance travelled, fuel economy/ fuel consumption information).  It also allows you to compare total fuel cost difference between two vehicles.

Fuel Economy Database

Fuel Ecnomy Database provides you with information on all vehicles participating in the Fuel Economy Labelling Scheme for passenger vehicles.  This will enable you to select the most energy-efficient vehicle that meets your needs if you are contemplating to buy one.

Fuel Economy Log sheet

The best way to achieve good fuel economy is to monitor it.  You can make use of a Fuel Economy Log to track your vehicle’s actual fuel economy.

Estimating Your Fuel Costs

Using the estimated fuel at $1.20/litre, a vehicle with fuel economy of 7 km/litre will use $3,249 of fuel annually.  However another vehicle with a better fuel economy of 10 km/litre will only use $2,400 of fuel annually.

This translates into $3,429 - $2,400 = $1,029 of savings annually, or $10,290 over a 10-year period.
